DPR 1978: DEBRECEN PHOTOHELIOGRAPHIC RESULTS FOR THE YEAR 1978 on the basis of photographs taken at the observatories of Gyula(Hungary), Kislovodsk(Russia), Kiev(Ukraine), Tashkent(Uzbekistan), Ussurijsk(Russia) by L.Dezso, O.Gerlei and Agnes Kovacs Publications of Debrecen Heliophysical Observatory Heliographic Series No.2. 1995 In August 1994, IAU Commission 10 endorsed the recommendation by the Board of the Joint Organization for Solar Observations (JOSO) that the DPR be published henceforth by electronic means beginning with the year 1978. Accordingly, at present, the DPR 1978 catalogue of sunspots is available on electronic media presented in ASCII version. It is actually the continuous succession of DPR 1977 (Publ.Debrecen Heliophys.Obs.Heliogr.Ser.No.1), which was printed as a book of 242 pages in 1100 copies in 1987 and sent free of charge or in exchange to all interested observatories and institutions, also to several of their research-workers. ________ The following FILES contain the DPR 1978, i.e. all those kind of data that were given in the DPR 1977 and as far as possible in a similar manner. README.txt - This file. introduc.txt - Material of observation and other particulars. The method of observation, reduction and calculation are given in detail in DPR 1977,pp.11-38. explan.txt - Detailed explanations to the tabulated sunspot data and the changes and modifications in the presentation of DPR on account of the use of the ASCII code. NNNN.rot - Daily results (positions, areas and other characteristics) of sunspots for each day in a whole synodic rotation (NNNN is the Carrington rotation number). Data of all sunspot groups lasting for two or more days are daily tabulated. (The rows contain 84 characters.) notes.txt - Additional information on some sunspot groups in order of Group Nos. general.cat - The catalogue contains particulars of every g r o u p of sunspots in continuation of those given in DPR 1977 (and for the previous years in the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results). (The rows contain 78 characters.) recurr.cat - Catalogue of recurrent s u n s p o t s observed in two or more consecutive apparitions (i.e. more than one, full or partial disc passage). (The rows contain 78 characters.) summary.dat - A brief descriptive summary of sunspot activity for 1978 and tables of mean areas and latitudes data (following Greenwich practice). In an additional table, disregarding the groups in the limb zones, the mean areas and latitudes of the groups, as well as of their p- and f-spots are also given separately. ________ The DPR 1978 is freely available over Internet: by anonymous ftp from fenyi.sci.klte.hu (193.6.137.102) from directory /pub/DPR. If you use DPR data in a published paper, please make adequate reference to DPR. If you have any request or comment, please feel free to send e-mail to one of us: LDezso or AKovacs@solar.stanford.edu Either can be reached at: Heliophysical Observatory, Hungarian Academy of Sciences H-4010 Debrecen, P.O.Box 30. Hungary We wish to continue and finish DPR for the years 1979 to 1985, almost to the end of Cycle No 21 to the level of detail provided in DPR 1977 and 1978. To do so, for this reason from IAU a fund was received for acquiring adequate computers and the Austrian Kanzelhoehe Solar Observatory offered additional hardware facilities and Dr.T.Pettauer of Kanzelhoehe makes also software installations to speed up the basic measurements and the data analysis. ________
